Bamboo Flooring Products

Bamboo is actually a grass and is harvested in three to four years, which is extremely fast compared to hardwood timber. Bamboo is a great alternative to a hardwood floor, it is harder than timber providing a tough surface, resistant to stains, scratches and the wear of heavy foot traffic. Strand woven manufactured bamboo ensures high density, hardness and stylish appearance. The process involves individually selecting and conditioning strips of bamboo then laying horizontally and compressing under high pressure to create 14mm thick boards from which the boards are cut. Bamboo flooring is very stable and resistant to termite attack, it is an excellent match for Australia’s harsh climate.

Key Benefits

  • Sustainable Alternative
  • Tough for the Australian Climate
  • Cost Effective
  • Well Engineered
  • Excellent Stability

Hardwood floating floors

Compared to solid flooring, hardwood floating flooring is constructed using a 3-4mm hardwood veneer at its top surface and underpinned with layers of cross laminated ply for strength and stability, meaning less of the natural timber resource is used. Hardwood floating flooring gives the genuine look of beautiful solid timber flooring and is prefinished with multiple coats of scratch and wear resistant UV Acrylic coating, enabling it to cope with heavy foot traffic.

Hardwood Floating Flooring can be laid by the experienced handyman and DIY advice is offered on request. You can lay hardwood floating flooring on any sound, dry  and flat sub-floor.Concrete, tiles, linoleum and old floor boards are all acceptable sub-floors.

Key Benefits

  • No mess – No toxic fumes
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Extensive range to suit every budget
  • Allergy free
  • Strength and stability
  • Quick and simple to lay
  • Durable pre-finished coating

The species or species mix will generally determine the overall colour of the floor. It should also be noted that species mixes may contain different species from one producer to another and may therefore appear different. Even when a single species is chosen there can be a wide variation in colour and it is also possible that a limited number of boards of different species may be present due to similarity in appearance. The sapwood of many hardwoods can be much lighter than adjacent heartwood and some boards may contain both light and dark colours. Even within a single species and within individual trees large colour variations can occur. The age of the tree can have a significant influence on the colour with younger timber often being lighter than the more mature timber. The product supplied may differ in colour to showroom samples.

Grades
The character of the floor is influenced by the species characteristics and therefore grade. Grading is a process that sorts boards according to the number and size of features present eg. gum (veins and knots). The following table indicates the grades in relevant Australian standards, but it should be noted that manufacturers often have their own grades. Often flooring that contains more features is more moderately priced, however irrespective of the features present, there is no difference between the grades in terms of machining imperfections and moisture content.

Australian hardwood – to AS 2796 – Timber hardwood – SHWN Milled products

Sizes
Typical cover widths and thicknesses for T & G Stip flooring are 60, 80, and 130 by 19mm. Actual cover widths may vary from these and should be checked with individual suppliers. When secret nailing, the cover width should be limited to a maximum of 85mm.
If the species or species mix contain a significant variation in colours the appearance of the floor will differ depending on the cover width. Narrower boards tend to blend the colour variation together Gapping between individual boards during drier times is also less with narrawer boards than it is with wide boards.

Janka Hardness
Hardness indicates a species resistance to indention and abrasion. Damage to timber floors may occur due to continual movement of furniture, heavy foot traffic and in particular “stilletto – heel” type shoes. The selection of a hard timber species ensures improved resistance to indentation and abrasion. Floor finishes will not significantly improve the hardness of timber flooring.
The hardness rating of a timber species is measured by the janka test. This is a standard test which meausres the penetration into the timber of a common load and projectile. The results relate to a hardness capacity of the material and are expressed in KN. This information is useful where the timber may be subject may be subject to potential damage from impacts e.g. dance floors.
The ratings given here are:

Soft – less than 5.5
Moderate – 5.5 – 7.0
Hard – 7.1 – 10.0
Very Hard – Greater than 10.0
